Assertive Communication - Mel's Story

Case Study - Before

Mel had a few confrontations in the workplace with a particular member of staff, this had gone on for a number of years. Her organisation had felt it was necessary to address the situation with training. After consultation with ourselves we recommended Assertive Communication would be the most beneficial course for Mel. She essentially needed to deal with criticism in a more helpful way and respond with a different attitude.


After attending our Assertive Communication training, Mel realised that the way she had previously reacted was not beneficial to herself and actually she had very little control over the other persons behaviour.


Case Study - After

Mel was able to accept constructive criticism without feeling to blame and that it was actually helpful in the long run. She was also able to respond to negative criticism by either challenging it or disagreeing with it in a professional manner. She was also able to accept that her reaction to certain situations was only likely to inflame them rather than improve them.


Mel also learned that if she had an idea she would need to back it up with facts and evidence, this would give her ideas better backing and more likely to go ahead.


Benefits

Mel felt that she could respond better in difficult situations, this enabled her to move on from past disagreements and actually getting a mutual understanding was far more beneficial than arguments. She also felt less stressed and was able to let go of situations than harbour a grudge.
