Media Skills Masterclass

Media Skills - Overview

Our one-day Media Skills course is designed for those whose role includes speaking to the press and presenting their organisation to the wider world directly via the media. It will provide you with professional skills that will allow you to develop the skills and confidence to handle the media effectively, no matter what the situation.

Media Skills Masterclass - Course Content

During this course, you will learn how to confidently:

  • Balance the demands of different media

  • Practice being interviewed face to face

  • Deliver on camera skills

  • Get your message across

  • Do more than just answering the questions

  • Interview with passion and speaking with clarity

  • Deal with nerves

  • How to prepare

  • Understand your rights

  • write a press release

  • Tailor for different media

On this course, you will learn how to effectively deal with the media. We will examine the different types of interview you might face. Is it a face to face meeting or over the phone? Is it live or pre-recorded?

TV and Radio interviews are often done 'remotely' so we will cover how you deal with this. How might that have an effect on you? Your interview might be edited to become part of a bigger story, and if so you may need to be prepared. Every interview will place different demands on you. By preparing for them and understanding their impact on your ability to perform well can ensure that you get your message across. You will learn the techniques and will be taught by Dr Daniel Thomas who has extensive experience on both UK and South Korean TV.

The best interviewees are those who've had a bit of practice and this is what this Masterclass is all about. And you will get three simulated interviews during the Masterclass in a variety of settings. You will also be able to see a playback of your performance. Journalists are interested in getting a story and we will look at how to get your messages across and avoid being drawn into saying more than you intended. It is the passion part that people often have problems with. It is this passion that is a compelling ingredient in a good interview. You will need to get this across with conviction as part of your communication.

We will show you the best techniques for handling nerves and keeping cool under pressure. Each delegate will identify their own media skills strengths and qualities. You will receive feedback from us and the other delegates on what they perceive as their strengths and/or what they have seen them do that works for them.
